Episode 75 - Patterns of Development

Leak, Sentiment, Oregon

This is patterns of development.

Hey everyone. I’m Kyle Gulau. On this show, patterns of development, we take less than 10 minutes each week to deconstruct what's going on in real estate, architecture, and urban planning.

First up this week, new urbanist principles leak onto social media platform TikTok. An article in Bloomberg highlights with a subtitle "Step aside, makeup tutorials and viral dance challenges — TikTok for urban planning has arrived."

CitiesTok has over 176 million views. While their content varies, these creators share a similar goal: to spread the gospel of urbanism to a new generation, and push policies that advance environmental adaptation and housing affordability.

Second item this week - Homebuilder sentiment plunges in July as buyers pull back.

The national home builders association's monthly survey of home builder sentiment dropped 12 points to 55.

The 12-point drop is the largest single-month drop in the survey's 37-year history with the exception of April 2020.

And it's a quick one this week...

Oregon's land conservation and development commission will be voting to adopt a new set of rules that reduce the required amount of parking.

In the words of Donald Shoup, there is a high cost to free parking.

Leading us to our patterns of the week:\

  1. Content creators on social media platform TikTok are getting some serious views with urbanist content.
  2. As interest rates continue to rise builder sentiment continues to decrease at record rates.
  3. Eliminate parking requirements to incentivize development

That's all for this week. Talk to you soon!
